November Is National Home Care and Hospice Month
By Jeff Salter, CEO and Founder, Caring Senior Service
In today’s healthcare climate, much of the debate rages over universal coverage, the ability to choose doctors and what procedures will be paid for by whatever system is set up later. As politics play out and the non-stop television cycle gives voice to the extremes, it is important that we remember that every day there are dedicated, hard-working professionals taking care of Americans now.
November is National Home Care and Hospice Month. Please join me in taking the time to celebrate all the great nurses, physical therapists, nurse aides, paraprofessionals, occupational therapists, respiratory therapists, physicians, and paid and unpaid caregivers who make it possible for millions of Americans to receive vital healthcare and service where it is most wanted – in the home.
As the debates go on, the reality is that America is changing rapidly. According to the National Association of Home Care & Hospice more than 11 million Americans receive home-delivered health care from home care providers. The US Census Bureau’s 2008 projections estimate that the senior citizen population will grow faster than all other groups in all states by 2050. Also, as America has turned more urban, home care and hospice companies often become the best avenue for healthcare services in rapidly-aging rural areas. These dedicated professionals are hitting the roads to care for our parents in the homes where we were raised.
And it is not just medical services available to Americans through home care and hospice services, it is important to remember that non-medical care is also available through personal assistance services. These companies provide for the daily-living activities for patients to remain independent in a place of their choosing, and thus avoiding traumatic relocation.
To the approximate 10 percent of the population in the United States over the age of 65, the benefits of at-home care would extend beyond comfort and convenience. More than just providing excellent care where and when patients need and want it, home care, hospice and personal assistance service saves the United States and commercial health insurers billions of health care dollars each year. There is no more cost-effective provider of health care in the country. In honor of National Home Care and Hospice Month, and to give back to the communities we serve, Caring Senior Service is donating hours of service to hospice companies across the nation to help their patients.

As part of a national, company-wide initiative, the local field office of Caring Senior Service in El Paso is teaming with the Rio Grande Area Agency On Aging to raise awareness about the availability of free or affordable medical equipment.
Throughout the months of August and September, local Caring Senior Service offices will provide information to the public about donation sites where they can deliver new or gently-used medical equipment. Each of Caring Senior Service’s 30 locations will partner with a local non-profit, church or government agency. In El Paso, the local partner is the Rio Grande Area Agency On Aging. In many cases, families of seniors may have medical equipment that is no longer needed – if the senior passed away or moved to a nursing home for example. These families are often looking for a place to donate it to someone in need. Finding and coordinating the delivery of the equipment can be difficult without the proper organization. This is where Caring Senior Service is stepping in, to spread the word among healthcare providers that these donation opportunities exist.
In addition, many healthcare professionals are often asked by patients where they might find low-cost medical supplies like hospital beds, walkers or wheelchairs. The information provided by Caring Senior Service also gives healthcare providers another resource to help their patients.
For seniors, Medicare will often pay for medical equipment if it is prescribed by a physician. For non-seniors, and in other instances, there sometimes is a need for medical equipment that may not be covered by government funding.
Each Caring Senior Service office is partnering with a local organization – church, Goodwill Industries, senior centers, non-profit, government agency – to get the word out about how to donate the new or gently-used equipment.

Caring Senior Serivce Teams With CSIdentity
Caring Senior Service implements comprehensive background screenings to ensure client safety
AUSTIN, Texas – When choosing someone to care for your loved one, a proper background check is requirement number one. This is why Caring Senior Service, a national personal assistance service provider, is furthering its commitment to reliable and trustworthy in-home care by partnering with identity theft protection company CSIdentity. Through this partnership, Caring Senior Service is utilizing CSIdentity’s comprehensive background check system, CSIdentity SAFESM, to verify that applicants are qualified to serve as caregivers, ultimately ensuring the safety and security of its clients and their loved ones.
“When using in-home care, our customers welcome us into their homes and invite our caregivers to, in essence, become part of their families. To ensure our customers’ safety, we must utilize the latest technology to verify qualifications and background information of our applicants and employees,” said Jeff Salter, CEO and founder of Caring Senior Service. “By partnering with CSIdentity and adopting its background check system, we are able to provide our clients with more complete data that proves we have hired the best and most qualified caregivers and will monitor them on an ongoing basis.”
CSIdentity SAFE is a Web-based pre-screening application process that takes advantage of the latest technology to allow Caring Senior Service to quickly and easily validate an applicant’s true identity, determine if his or her name or date of birth has been altered and if he or she has a criminal background under any alternate names or aliases. Additional screenings also include drug testing, employment and education verification services, and department of motor vehicle records searches.Ultimately this process allows Caring Senior Service to conduct a thorough background search based on more complete and verified data. Then, after a hire is made, CSIdentity SAFES continues to work on the company’s behalf to apprise it of any crimes an employee may commit while employed. “CSIdentity employs the latest technology to help companies, like Caring Senior Service, know they are hiring honest people. We search thousands of records to make sure applicants are providing truthful information and have clear criminal records,” CSIdentity Chairman Bill Morrow said. “We dive deeper than other companies to give our clients and our clients’ clients piece of mind in regard to their hiring decisions. At the end of the day, that helps ensure a safe workplace and a better community for us all.”
CSIdentity SAFES scours more than 350 million unique identity records for criminal histories, including searches of criminal and sex offender records from all 50 states plus Washington D.C., Guam and Puerto Rico. All records obtained by CSIdentity are encrypted, stored and managed in the company’s Records Management System. Coping With Caregiver Stress
Many caregivers are reluctantly thrust into their role without preparation because the need for care usually comes with little warning. Caregivers end up operating in a “crisis” mode: arranging medical care and living arrangements, scheduling care time, providing meals and household chores and so forth. In the midst of the stress they rarely take time to find out what resources are available to help them.
We’ve all taken a sick child to a doctor’s office, been with a parent or grandparent at the hospital, or endured first-hand a major medical procedure. In the midst of the emergency there is often one caregiver who stands out, who goes the extra mile and makes his or her patients feel better with just their presence. Maybe that caregiver was professionally trained; maybe it was a dedicated family member or friend. But who is there for them when they need help?
These caregivers and social workers dedicate much of their lives to taking care of our children and families in need, our elderly, and our mentally ill. The demand for their expertise is growing.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the call for social workers is expected to grow twice as fast as any other occupation, especially in areas of gerontology, home healthcare, substance abuse, private social service agencies, and school social work. Those numbers represent just the paid caregivers. There are countless family members taking on this role in households across Texas and the nation every day.
Those high demands on a caregiver result in a great deal of stress.
A 2003 study on the effect that stress has on caregivers has lent credence to the oft-repeated adage “stress can kill you”. The team, led by Dr. Janice Kiecolt- Glaser, reports on a six-year study of elderly people caring for spouses with Alzheimer’s Disease. The study not only found a significant deterioration in the health of caregivers when compared to a similar group of non-caregivers, but also found the caregivers had a 63 percent higher death rate than the control group.
As we celebrate National Professional Social Work Month this March, we also look at some strategies to deal with caregiver stress.
Ask for help.
Ironically, caregivers often sever ties with family, friends and support groups just when help from these people is most needed.
As a caregiver you must ask for help. If it’s difficult to ask for yourself, use an advocate: a sibling, friend or professional care manager to arrange a meeting and get formal, written commitments from those people who are willing to help you. The extra help will give you breathing room to find all those resources that are there to help you.
Seek care management advice.
A number of organizations and private companies will give you advice and guidance, many for free. A good source of professional advice is the rapidly growing non-medical home care companies, also called Personal Assistance Services. Most will offer free consultations and these companies will also provide paid aides to help you with your loved one. They can assist with duties like bathing, dressing, shopping, household chores, transportation, companionship and much more.
Use assistive technology.
There are a number of technologies to make sure your loved ones are safe while you’re away. The QuietCare system of sensors tracks and reports a patient’s activity from key areas like the bedroom, bathroom and kitchen. Activity reports can be emailed to family members. DailyMed is another helpful resource. It compiles all prescriptions, overthe- counter medications and vitamins, and organizes them into pre-sorted packets clearly marked with the date and time they should be taken. An entire 30-day supply is delivered to the home in a convenient dispensing box.
Make plans for funding future care arrangements for you or for a healthy parent.
Recent studies show that long term care insurance (LTCI) positively impacts not only the patient but also the caregiver. A caregiver whose loved one carries insurance is twice as likely to continue working than those caring for non-insured relatives. In addition, working caregivers of those with long term care insurance said they were less likely to experience stress. If they are not feeling well themselves they are not compelled to give constant attention to the care recipient or provide care personally because they have options. Also, the group with insurance devoted more “quality time”, more companionship and less hands-on assistance than the group without.
See if your healthy parent can still buy insurance. If he or she can’t afford it, see if other family members might contribute to premiums. There are also useful strategies using a reverse mortgage to buy long-term care insurance and life insurance for your loved ones. You should also consider insurance for yourself so when you need care someday it won’t be so stressful on your caregivers.
Take time off — find temporary substitutes.
Taking a break from caregiving is just as important as taking a break at work or taking that long-awaited vacation. A care manager may be of help in selecting the best temporary help to give you a break. Or you may make arrangements with family or friends to give you a break from caregiving. The time you give yourself now will result in less stress on you and better overall quality of care.
Holiday Time Is Joyful, But Be Watchful Of A Senior’s Changing Needs
In today’s United States, many Americans do not live in the same town as their parents. This makes the holidays an eagerly-anticipated time as it is often the only opportunity for those who live far away from one another to spend time together.
Often, however, what is anticipated as a joyful occasion can be a reality check. Elderly loved ones may have reached a point where they need help with daily activities, unbeknownst to family members. It can come as a real shock to a son or daughter to see their mother or father – often a rock of inspiration in the past – not caring about the house, not eating, not keeping up with their appearance or worse.
“It is so important for family members to be honest about the situation,” said Jeff Salter, President and Founder of Caring Senior Service. “If the signs are there that an elderly loved one needs help with daily activities, early action can help avoid major problems.”
A senior who is having problems walking is a fall risk. Complications after falls are the leading cause of premature deaths in the elderly. Assistance in the home, such as that provided by Caring Senior Service, can help prevent falls.
Medication mistakes and lack of compliance are also frequent symptoms of an elderly person needing help in the home. It is estimated that between 40 and 60 percent of all nursing home admissions in the United States are caused by medication mistakes or not taking prescriptions correctly.
“A major incident such as a fall or a driving accident will lead to action,” Salter says. “But when the signs are less obvious – apathy towards once-beloved activities, not eating, trouble waking, forgetfulness – is when a family member needs to extra vigilant.”
Salter reminds loved ones of the elderly to observe and take warning signs seriously. He cautions that seniors are not always receptive to the offer of help, so loved ones must remember that persistence may save the life of the one they love.
“Most elderly persons have lived independently all their lives, they built our nation,” he said. “It may be seen as a loss of empowerment. But when the risks of living alone are weighed, and help is experienced, most seniors are very thankful that their loved ones cared enough to take action.”
Salter recommends family members look for these signs, including looking a little deeper:
- Confusion, depression, apathy and forgetfulness – Is the house being kept? Are dress and appearance no longer important? Is a favorite past time now shrugged off?
- Dehydration, poor nutrition – Look in the refrigerator. What is in there? How long has it been there? Is it stocked or empty? Is your loved one drinking enough fluids?
- Lack of personal hygiene, incontinence – When movement is difficult, bathing becomes a chore.
- Evidence of unsafe driving – Sometimes this is the most difficult conversation to have.
- Wandering and falling – How is your loved one taking steps up or down? Do they wander at night?
- Not taking medications – Read prescription bottles. Ask for details.
- Disorientation – Small episodes can be telling signs.

Caring Senior Service Teams Up With QuietCare
TSI Distribution, LLC Announces The Appointment Of Caring Senior Service As Its Authorized Dealer For QuietCare In Texas
--Leaders in Security Solutions and Healthcare Activity Monitoring Technology Join Forces to Provide Seniors with Safe, Independent Living at Home
SARASOTA, FL and SAN ANTONIO, TX – April 4, 2008 - TSI Distribution, LLC (TSI), a leading Master Distributor of monitored wellness, safety and security solutions is proud to announce the appointment of Caring Senior Service as an authorized and certified sales and service representative for QuietCare, a new Senior Care medical monitoring service for both private home and managed care facilities. QuietCare has been called “the most important advancement in Senior Care in a generation”, and will be represented by Caring Senior Service in Texas. Quiet Care helps Seniors and those with medical frailties or disabilities continue to live at home and remain independent through a series of non-invasive, wireless activity sensors placed in the home that provide loved ones, caregivers, and medical or social service personnel with round-the clock information about their safety and well-being. These sensors monitor the individual’s daily activities, and when these activities veer from the norm, concerned individuals are notified through a secure, password protected web site that action could be necessary, or contacted immediately if an emergency has been identified. QuietCare enables these individuals to “turn back the clock” on escalating care issues as one gets older to defer and sometimes eliminate the need for more expensive human interaction or institutionalized care. Loved one or Caregiver related stress is similarly reduced. QuietCare costs just a few dollars a day, does not require internal home wiring or a long-term contract, and is installed in less than an hour. Caring Senior Service has been a successful business in the Texas and six other states for more than 17 years, and has contributed to those states through providing non-medical home care to the elderly. For more information about QuietCare in Texas, call Bill Archinal at 210-787-2563. All systems are supported with monitoring and response services provided by UL-Rated, geographically dispersed monitoring centers. In case of an emergency or inactivity report, a specially trained emergency response operator will automatically communicate with the senior and, if needed, designated family members, caregivers or local emergency services.
