Director of Support Services Shares Personal Challenges of Parkinson’s Caregiving

Eric Carter, our Director of Support Services shares his journey as both a home care expert and a family caregiver for his father in an article for McKnights. Carter’s father is a Vietnam veteran diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease due to Agent Orange exposure. Not initially recognizing the signs, Carter realized his father’s decline in communication was a symptom of Parkinson’s. Despite his father’s eligibility for VA benefits, Carter’s family struggled to access available resources. Carter emphasizes the need for better education on available support for caregivers and advocates for their inclusion in policy discussions. Through his own experiences caring for aging parents, Carter highlights the importance of patience and grace in reciprocating the care received in childhood.
